Sorry about the continued MIA guys. I was offered a job and just moved to a new state too. Needless to say, things have been a bit crazy. I'll try to be more consistent with the photo posts and make some time for some studies of my own. Thanks for your patience!

Jeremiah Humphries post 2

Happy Friday all, here's my second contribution. This was much harder than my eye initially assumed, so I spent several hours on this, mostly focusing on lighting and texture rather than detail or proportion. For an enviro, it's easier to get away with that particular kind of sloppiness I hope. Let me know what you think if you've got a few minutes to spare. Thanks.

Wow, it has been forever since I have been able to sit down and post anything new. I will have more news on why that is soon but for now, sorry for the lack of posts on my part.

Aaron Wilkerson - castle

I used a bit of photo texture for the rocks, it saves a lot of time and makes it much more convincing. A tip: motion blur is useful for reflections in water.

Hey guys, I thought this was kind of cool. Our own Jeremiah Humphries has been featured over at http://conceptships.blogspot.com/ Good for you Jeremiah!

I chose this image to study because it poses many challenges painting artificial elements and it provided an opportunity to study ancient architecture.

Misty city

I do plan to post more I just haven't been painting as much lately.

Heres a study of the shanghai photo. A very low-contrast image. I dowloaded a nice set of bird brushes which I used for the first time here.

Sugestions

There has been a long bit of inactivity here and while I completely understand how difficult it can be to have the spare time to do extra study, I want to make sure I am making this place as accessible for each of you as possible. Personally, I would love to see more comments on each other's posts, more critiques, more encouragements, more time sharing about what you are discovering personally. Ultimately though, I just want to make sure you're getting the best opportunity to study and build upon what you already know. That said, I am open for suggestions if there are any. Are you finding the images I post too complex? Should I more often choose more simplistic scenes? If I started including reference for human and animal figure studies, would it be of interest or beneficial to you as an artist? Let me know in the name of improving this study group!

Cheers,
Ben

Ben Greene post 6

I keep having to remind myself that getting the colors spot on and getting everything just as it is in the photo is NOT what I need to be shooting for. Instead I'm shooting for the believability of the image and looking at how the color is interacting. I also didn't let myself use any adjustment layers except for an overlay to help make it a little darker. Doing that is really helping me stretch my understanding of the image.

Ben Greene Post 5

I try to challenge my understanding of color by not color picking from the photos I'm referencing. With this one though I decided to first explore the photo's pallet with the color picker window open, just to try and see how it was all working together instead of just guessing. After I studied the image like that I went about painting from what I'd learned but still without color picking for the actual study painting. I found this to be a great way to commit to memory what I was discovering while exploring the photo with the color picker. I'd highly recommend trying it for yourself if you already haven't!

Autumn study

Phew! A lot of work. It reminds me of the matte paintings of Rivendel. I'm pleased with what I was able to do in 3 hours.

Thanks for the invite guys. It looks like someone beat me to the first take on this photo. Its a challenging subject, actually a little harder than a traditional landscape because of the textures but I enjoy a challenge.

Jeremiah Humphries Post #1

Heya, just thought I'd introduce myself, as well as thank you all for the invite. I'm of course Jeremiah Humphries, I'm a freelance concept artist working in Minnesota, and I've somehow managed to secure a number of gigs in the past with some game companies. I've been painting for two years or so, and I'd appreciate any input about the industry and my work. Thanks much.

Changes and Such

First of all, *bonks head* I completely skipped posting images last week. I've got some new ones coming up after this post.

Second: If it isn't glaringly obvious already, I took advantage of new settings made available and updated the look of the blog. I'm open for criticisms or suggestions if you have them since we are all sharing this space. I just thought these settings made for a more interesting page to visit.

Hope everyone is getting by splendidly and staying busy in your artistic endeavors!

Forest Scene

hey yal! this is an awesome blog to be apart of, it's good practice and keeps me experimenting with brushes. Seeing your work is amazing in my eyes, keep it up! And I will continue to practice as well. Thanks!

Ben Greene 4th post

So I've been meaning to give this one a go for a while now. Finally made some time for it. I started by going for broad strokes and color shapes but don't feel that I accomplished much of what I intended. So, that's frustrating.

PS. That palm tree suuuucks!

Hi guys.

I attempted this precisely because I knew it would turn out strangely. I really don't have a clear cut way to draw complicated building textures that doesn't involve sourcing from photos, so this was definitely a learning experience.

I'd be interested in seeing how anyone else tackles this, if they feel up to it!

Mike Bear: Week 5

I thought maybe it would be fun to experiment with adding some story to the landscapes.

When doing studies from photos I never know whether I should make it as accurate to the photo as possible or take some liberties and try capturing the essence of the scene. I guess I like the idea of just trying to get the feel of it, maybe finding a surprising method to paint along the way.
